A Cats Meaning In Life
Short Story By Alyssa Smith
I woke up and took the biggest stretch I could. I laid back down onto my bed. I laid in wait. I was waiting to hear the words that I awake to every morning. Suddenly, I heard my beckoning “HERE KITTYKITTYKITTYKITTY!” I jumped up and bolted towards my food bowl. The orange cat was already there gorging himself on our food, and I promptly pushed him out of my way. He gingerly snuck his way back in, but I didn’t mind, I had all the food I desired at that point. As soon as I finished, I went up to the girl with the long brown hair. She is always the one who wore the softest clothes, and she is always the gentlest when she strokes my soft black fur. I always make sure to show her my affection by giving her my biggest purrs and pushing my head against head hand so she would be forced to scratch my ears. I sometimes worry that she is only petting me because she feels like she needs to make sure I feel loved, but really, I always come up to her to make sure she feels loved. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed the blond girl with the short hair starting to come up to me. I didn’t want to leave the brunette alone, but I feared the blond girl would grab hold of me and not let go. I made the rather intelligent decision to bolt in the opposite direction. I heard her stomping quickly behind me, and as I rounded a corner, I saw the perfect opportunity for escaping her grasp, a bed. I dashed under it, and as I turned around, I saw a long arm reach out towards me. As I sat there successfully eluding her grasp, I began to wonder my meaning in life. Is it simply to outrun the ones I despise the most? Is my purpose just to eat? Actually, food does sound pretty good right now. I’ll just have to wait for her to go away.
After what felt like an eternity to my growling stomach, the little blonde girl walked away in defeat. I could hear her grabbing something off of a table and heading out of the door with the other girl behind her. Finally, a house all to myself. I darted out from under the bed towards the food and ate until I felt as if my stomach would burst. I went to the sunniest part of the house, which happened to be where the orange cat was, stretched myself out next to him and fell asleep. I had the most wonderful dream about chasing mice and as soon as I caught them, they turned into my favorite treats!
Bang! I abruptly woke up to the sound of the door closing as someone walked in. Weird, I thought to myself, no one ever is home this early. I gingerly poked my head around a corner to see the blond girl with wet black marks running down her face. Was she growing new stripes? It didn’t matter, the way she acted was quite strange. She started running towards me! I was frozen in fear, and as soon as I braced myself for her impact with me, she ran right by me without even looking at me. Had I become invisible? Was I no longer worthy of her attention? I had to find out. I cautiously followed the sound of whimpering to a bedroom. She was lying face down on the bed. As I walked in, I feared the immediate grabbing of my person and her never loosening grasp. But it was quite strange, she didn’t even acknowledge my presence. How rude! Just sitting there with her head on the bed acting as if I wasn’t even there. I jumped up on the bed, curious as to why she isn’t noticing me. She heard my jump, turned towards me, and reached out for me. I took a step back out of fear, and after noticing that, she retracted her hand. Another tear rolled down her face. She seemed as if she wasn’t going to do anything bad as long as I investigated her slowly and cautiously. I stiffed her red face, and I felt a hand going down my back, but it wasn’t her usual harsh touch, it was gentle and kind. I started to lick her tears, and she began to giggle. I purred back to her in response. After sitting there for a few minutes just purring and letting her pet me, I felt my eyelids begin to get heavy, and I shut my eyes for just one more cat nap knowing that this is the purpose of my life.
